The Sabres had a chance to add to their stockpile, but skipped over Sanborn native Thomas McCollum when they had an opportunity to select him late in the first round of Friday’s NHL Entry Draft.
With the 26th pick, Buffalo took Tyler Ennis, a small forward from Edmonton, Alberta. At the time, McCollum was the second-highest rated player still on the draft board, according to the Canadian network TSN.
But McCollum didn’t fall much farther, and the Detroit Red Wings took him with the 30th pick, the final selection of the first round. McCollum is expected to return to the Ontario Hockey League’s Guelph Storm this season.
