The Niagara County Community College baseball team’s luck finally ran out on Sunday, as the Trailblazers dropped a 13-2 decision to Hudson Valley Community College in the Region III championship game in Batavia.
The Trailblazers (18-15) needed a pair of wins in the double-elimination tournament to advance to next week’s NJCAA World Series in Texas, but ran into a tough team at Dwyer Stadium.
Freshman Brian Kwiatkowski (Tonawanda) had a home run for NCCC while Sean Jamieson added a triple. Mark Bigley (Niagara Falls) had the other RBI for the Trailblazers.
“It was a great year,” said Matt Clingersmith, who saw his team improve by 14 wins in his second season at the helm.
Blocho scores in loss
Grand Island’s Mike Blocho had a pair of goals, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 20-2 decision to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.
Adam Jones scored the other goal for Canisius (10-6) while Mike Leveille had four goals and two assists for Syracuse (13-2).
NU tops Marist
Marcus Spaulding threw nearly eight innings and Andrew Macdonald had five hits as the Niagara University baseball team topped Marist 7-2 in the rubber match of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series on Sunday.
Jonny Smith (Niagara-Wheatfield), Frank Kurnik and Matt Lucchesi each had two hits for Niagara (21-25 overall, 9-12 in MAAC).
Macdonald also finished with four RBIs for the winners.
“Andrew has been there all year for us, and it was very nice to see him come up big for the team in key offensive spots,” NU coach Chris Chernisky said.
UB game canceled
The game scheduled between the University at Buffalo and Bowling Green University was canceled due too weather conditions.
