HS ROUNDUP (May 10): Lady Spartans win own track meet

The host Starpoint Lady Spartans girls track and field team won the third annual Starpoint Team Challenge Saturday. Starpoint finished with 69 points, 10 more than second place Williamsville North and 19 more than third-place Lockport. Leading the way for the Lady Spartans in the tandem-scored meet was the 400-meter duo of Teresa Delabio and Lindsay Welsh, who finished first in a time of 2:05.81. Starpoint also finished second in the 3,000 and was third in the discus, pole vault and 100 high hurdles.

Grand Island, which finished 13th as a team, got a first-place finish from the duo of Jenna Raepple and Amber Duda in the triple jump.

Lancaster won the boys event, but full results were not available.

Jacks shine at Hornell Invitational

Several members of the North Tonawanda boys and girls track and field teams turned in solid performances at the Hornell Invitational. Jared Voelker set a North Tonawanda record in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 56.0 seconds, good for second. He was also fourth in the 110 hurdles, in 15.9. In the 400, Adam Burns tied a school record, finishing in 50.75, good for fourth. Burns and Voelker also teamed with Dustin Johnson and Marvin Tooke to win the 1,600 relay, in 3:30.0. Johnson and Voelker were part of the winning 3,200 relay, along with Sean Smyth and Nick Kirisits, finishing in 8:31.3. Also for the NT boys, Greg Cudney finished second in the 110 hurdles, running a 15.6. Kirisits was fifth in the individual 1,600, in 4:37.4.

On the girls side, University at Buffalo-bound Jackie Burns won three events and helped break two meet records. Burns broke a 15-year-old record in the 400, winning with a time of 58.2. She was also part of the 1,600 relay that broke a 10-year-old record with a season-best time of 4:04.3. Burns was joined by Staci Czaja, Kayleigh Bemisderfer and Olivia DiPalma. That same team also took first in the 400 relay, finishing in 51.9. Czaja and DiPalma finished first and second, respectively, in the 200, turning in times of 26.4 and 26.8.

Bemisderfer took sixth in the individual 400 hurdles with a time of 109.6, while Mary Ellen Ringler finished fifth in the 100 with a time of 13.4. In the individual 3,000, Madison Wawrzynek was sixth with a time of 11:39.7. NT’s 3,200 relay team of Megan Chapin, Sarah Leach, Angela Lizauckas and Taylor Greene finished sixth, clocking 10:40.5.

Baseball

Albion 21, Akron 5

The host Purple Eagles pounded out 21 hits in cruising to the Niagara-Orleans League victory. Jeff Andalora and Shane Woolson both had four hits, Nick Theodorakos and Justin Ward three and Brad Rush and Kevin Walter two each to lead the balanced attack for Albion, which scored in every inning to stay perfect at 9-0 in league play. Theodorakos’ hits included a double and triple with six RBIs.

“We hit the ball with more authority than we have been,” Albion coach Gary Mannella said.

Pat Little had two hits, including a triple, and Nick Cummings added two hits for Akron (6-3).

Barker 7, CSAT 5

The Raiders used a three-run sixth inning to secure a key N-O win. Josh Demarais doubled in the tying run and Ethan Dewart doubled home the winning run to cap the Raiders’ key rally.

Steve Rowland had a double and triple on the day with three RBIs, while Cody Blackley and Shane Schultz each added two hits apiece for Barker (4-5 N-O). CSAT falls to 2-7.

St. Joe’s 2, O’Hara 0

At Expressway Field, Alex Drennan pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead the Marauders in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association action. Andrew Keysor had an RBI single for the Marauders (5-6 MMAA). Angelo Sciandra pitched a four-hitter for O’Hara.

N-W 10, Canisius 8

Billy Nalbone was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run as the Falcons won a non-league contest at Delaware Park. Reese Bedient was the winning pitcher for Niagara-Wheatfield (9-6 overall) and Corey Paige earned the save.

SOFTBALL

THS splits at Immaculata Tourney

The Tonawanda Warriors split a pair of opening round game at the annual Immaculata Tournament at the Nike Base in Hamburg. THS (7-11 overall) beat Alden in its opener, 8-1, and then lost to the host Bears, 8-0.

In game one, Kelsey Schroeder threw a complete game, allowing only five hits and striking out nine. Andrea Calabrese had three hits, while Sam Dayton and Meghan Kossow each had a two-run single.

The nightcap saw Megan Smith toss a no-hitter for Immaculata. Tonawanda advances to the semifinals of the silver bracket, which begins at 1 p.m. today.

Boys Lacrosse

N-Wheatfield 15, Eden 2

The Falcons prepared for matchups with arguably their stiffest competition to date this week in Orchard Park and Frontier with a blowout non-league win at Terry Harvey Field. Emmett Printup had five goals and three assists to lead N-W (11-3 overall).

Also for the Falcons, Nate Capton, Joe Ditto and Loyld Chrysler each had two goals. All-area defenseman Nick Melligan also got into the scoring column with a goal and two assists. Joe Grady and Julian Fauzui split the win in net.
