HS ROUNDUP (FEB. 22): Niagara Catholic beats O’Hara for third time

Staff Reports
Greater Niagara Newspapers

Dedicating their performance to coach Chuck Sprigg’s mother, Mary, who died Wednesday morning, the Niagara Catholic Patriots beat Cardinal O’Hara for the third time in four starts this season, 68-52 at St. Joe’s Thursday night.

“It was, to this point, the toughest game I had to coach,” Sprigg said. “It was tough trying to stay focused.

“I respect the O’Hara players because all of their coaches and players came in and offered their condolences before the game.”

The Patriots (15-10) will play St. Francis at 8:15 p.m. Saturday at Canisius College in a Manhattan Cup quarterfinal.

Dyrell Dolson led Niagara Catholic (15-10) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. A.J. Roberts chipped in with 14 points, 12 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists.

James Ewing paced the Hawks with 17 points. Garrison Gross added 12 and Dennis Weppner had 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Class A-1

Grand Island 54, Hutch-Tech 41

Courtney Donovan led the third-seeded Vikings with 20 points, 10 rebounds, eight blocks and five assists.

Mallory Griffiths added 10 points and 10 rebounds for Grand Island (17-4 overall).

“I thought our kids played defense well,” GI coach Jenepher Banker said

No. 6 Hutch-Tech finishes its season 12-10, while the Vikings will play NFL-rival Kenmore East at 2 p.m Saturday at Lockport High School.

Ken East 52, Starpoint 43

Freshman Joelle Pollak had 17 points and senior Kacie Mills added 16 as second-seeded Kenmore East topped No. 7 Starpoint in a quarterfinal game.

Meaghan Freund added 14 for the Bulldogs (17-4 overall).

Amanda Boron had 18 points and Andi Ridge added 10 for the Lady Spartans (11-11).

Monsignor Martin

Holy Angels 38, N. Catholic 20

Emily Bird and Jen Hare each had six points, but the Niagara Catholic Patriots could only muster 20 points as a team in a Monsignor Martin Athletic Association playoff contest at the Gallagher Center. The Patriots were held scoreless in the opening quarter.

“We played really good defense, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” NC coach Larry Puzan said.
