HS ROUNDUP (FEB. 13): Niagara Catholic falls to O'Hara

The Cardinal O’Hara Hawks got a game-high 25 points and great defense from Garrison Gross in avenging an earlier loss to Niagara Catholic with a 68-65 decision in Monsignor Martin Athletic Association boys basketball play on Tuesday.
“I owe Garrison Gross a steak dinner,” O’Hara coach Sil Dan joked after the win.
James Ewing had a double-double with 23 points and 19 rebounds for the Hawks (9-12 overall, 3-5 MMAA).
A.J. Roberts led Niagara Catholic (13-8, 3-5) with 19 points, while Jeremiah Jones added 12 and Dyrell Dolson had 11.
Maryvale 83, Tonawanda 38
Matt Brennan poured in a game-high 20 points and added 12 rebounds to spark the visiting Flyers (13-6, 8-3 ECIC) past Tonawanda.
Topping the Warriors (3-16, 2-10) were Eric Davies with 16 points and Dale O’Connor with eight.
Grand Island 50, N-W 42
The host Vikings got 12 points and 13 rebounds from Greg Feathers in the win.
Chris Rajczak had nine points and 10 steals for Grand Island (9-9, 6-7).
Tom Sheehan scored a game-high 14 points for Niagara-Wheatfield (4-14, 4-9).
Lockport 73, Lew-Port 61
The Lions (9-9, 8-5 NFL) were led by big Dominic Fotia’s 19 points and 16 rebounds.
Also for Lockport, Heavy Herring’s 15 points. Joe Croff canned 13 and Nate Ennis added a dozen for Lockport.
Leading Lew-Port (3-10) was Rob Seyler with 18 points. Zach Eoute netted 12 and Dave Vanoni 11.
Ken West 50, NT 44
The host Blue Devils got a game-high 19 points from Joe Mogavero in pulling out a 50-44 win. Edvin Ramulic added 10 points and 15 rebounds for Ken West (12-7, 10-3), which wraps up second place in the Niagara Frontier League.
Mogavero added six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Aaron Davis had 18 points for NT (2-17, 0-13).
Wilson 67, Newfane 59
Chris Johnson had 20 points as Wilson beat Newfane for the second time thids season to stay in the hunt for a share of the Niagara-Orleans League title. Doug Edwards added 19 and Ethan Baker had 14 for Wilson (10-9 overall, 8-3 N-O).
Wilson outscored Newfane 18-2 in the fourth quarter.
Rob Linhart had 19 points and Jose Balseca added 13 for Newfane (9-3).
Junior Varsity
- Carl Graff had 13 points for Niagara-Wheatfield in a 50-37 win over GI. Lance Robinson led Grand Island with 10 points.
Boys Bowling
Niagara Falls 7, Ken West 0
The Wolverines rolled to the win at Bowl-O-Drome, tying Lew-Port for the Niagara Frontier League boys bowling title with the win over Ken West.
Matt Anderson led the Wolverines (10-4) with a 289-705. Jake Hayes added a 259-680, Jon Miller had a 244 and Albert Bosley had a 236.
Sean Bentley had a 241-628 and Rob Kerr chipped in with a 221-628 for West.
NFHS won the pin count. 3,801-3,439.
Girls Bowling
Niagara Falls 5.5, Ken West 1.5
Teresa Ricotta fired a 235-594, Renee Allen had a 198-535 and Gina Ventrilla had a 183-523 as Niagara Falls topped Ken West at Bowl-O-Drome.
Sara Greck led the Blue Devils with a 212-204-598.
The Falls won the pin count, 3,072-2,875.
Girls Basketball
Lockport 71, Lew-Port 24
Bridgette Burke of the Lady Lions (13-5, 12-2) canned a game-high 16 points as Lockport clinched its first Niagara Frontier League championship in four years.
Also for Lockport, Renee Schwartz scord 15 points and Tiara Durant added 10.
Topping the Lady Lancers (0-18, 0-13) was Carolyn Gianni and Janelle Stepien with five points apiece.
Grand Island 50, N-W 23
Courtney Donovan scored 22 points to pass 1,000 for her career as Grand Island crushed Niagara-Wheatfield in a Niagara Frontier League game. Mallory Griffiths added 11 for GI (15-4 overall, 10-3 NFL).
North Tonawanda 42, Kenmore West 41
The Lady Jacks led by as many as 12, then held on to beat Kenmore West, giving NT coach Rachel Martin her second win over her alma mater in as many years.
Julie Harmon and Andrea Hromowyk each had 10 points as NT improved to 10-9 overall and 6-7 in the Niagara Frontier League.
Jenna Rickan had five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points and Raven Metoyer added 16 for Ken West (7-10, 5-8).
Kenmore East 65, Niagara Falls 40
Meaghan Freund had 19 points and Kacie Mills added 16 for the victorious Bulldogs (15-4, 10-3).
Destiny Harrison had 18 points for the Wolverines (9-10, 6-8).
Newfane 41, Wilson 32
The visiting Lady Panthers (16-4, 10-2 N-O) got 11 points from Melissa Wasik and 10 from Laura Hambruch in their win, which clinched a tie for the league title with Albion.
Topping the Lakewomen with 10 points was Amy Frauen.
Junior varsity
- Angela Hastings scored 18 points for Niagara-Wheatfield, but they fell to Grand Island 36-35.
CLUB HOCKEY
Lew-Port 6, Depew 6
Tom Mooradian had two goals and an assist and Marc DeGiulio and Colton Crossley added a goal and three assists in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Lancers squandered a four-goal lead, but held on for the tie.
Hagop Otabachian and Scott Beseth each added a goal and Danny Peters had two assists for Lew-Port (7-7-3).
DeGiulio, the Lancers’ leading scorer, was named to the first team all-Western New York small school club hockey team.
