FED HOCKEY PREVIEW: Falcons eyeing another deep run

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Griffs shock UB in final seconds
The Canisius basketball faithful might finally have a team they can be faithful for. Frank Turner drove coast-to-coast and banked in a short runner with 1.5 seconds left Tuesday as the Golden Griffins defeated Buffalo 73-71 in front of 3,392 fans at Alumni Arena on Tuesday.

  • MEN'S HOCKEY: Eagles hope to stay on roll
If last Wednesday’s win over RPI was redemption for some of the Niagara University men’s hockey team, tonight’s College Hockey America matchup against Robert Morris can be the beginning of a legitimate streak.

  • GIRLS BOWLING: Niagara Falls hopes to stay near the top
Niagara Falls is without five starters from last year’s squad, which finished just 14 pins shy of a berth in the state championships. Among those lost to graduation are Alyssa Narkiewicz, Michelle Granieri and Krystal Gravelle.

  • WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Niagara wins MAAC championship
The Purple Eagles, in their third season under coach Susan Clements, swept Marist in three games at Canisius’ Koessler Center, and qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.

  • COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Nov. 23): UB can claim 1,000th victory tonight against Canisius
In the first Big 4 basketball game of the season, Buffalo has a chance to win its 1,000th game in program history when Canisius visits Alumni Arena tonight.

  • GIRLS SWIMMING: KW relay captures state title
Marissa Dressel closed out her Kenmore West swimming career in a big way Saturday at the state swimming and diving championships.

  • WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Niagara leaps into MAAC final
Wearing home whites and going against the scoreboard guests, the Niagara women’s volleyball team invaded the Koessler Center — along with a raucous cheering section of parents, alumni and a lowercase n-zone — and defeated Siena in the semifinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship tournament.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Niagara fades late in loss to Austin Peay
After beating Howard on Friday and Central Florida on Saturday, the Purple Eagles (3-2) went up 21-4 in the early going on Sunday, but allowed the Governors to come back and take the lead with 6:18 remaining and eventually lost 69-67.

  • COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Nov. 21): Dolson's return bolsters Blazers
Making his season debut after a three-game suspension, Niagara County Community College men’s basketball player Dyrell Dolson had 17 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday’s 76-68 home win over Corning.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: UB beats Towson on OT
Rodney Pierce broke out of his shooting slump to score 18 points, Calvin Betts notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and John Boyer handed out a career-high 12 assists as the Buffalo Bulls came back beat Towson 78-69 on Saturday in Maryland.

  • HS FOOTBALL: NT will play for state title
For the first time in North Tonawanda football’s long and storied history, the Lumberjacks are going to play for a state championship, thanks to a 28-7 victory over III-Baldwinsville in Saturday’s Class AA state semifinal at Marina Auto Stadium. The Jacks will play New Rochelle for the title at 1 p.m. next Sunday in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

  • WOMEN'S HOCKEY: NU women put a scare in nation’s top team
The Mercyhurst women’s hockey team was probably thrilled to get out of town on Saturday afternoon. Why? Because they got the heck scared out of them by a gritty Niagara club all weekend.

  • WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: MAAC title would complete Niagara’s turnaround
The youngest team in the nation a year ago, the Purple Eagles won just six games, and finished last in the 10-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Still without any seniors, and a starting lineup of all underclassmen, Niagara’s 15-win improvement this season was the biggest in the country. And it netted them then No. 2 seed in the MAAC tournament, which begins today at Canisius, and three major year-end awards.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Team defense leads Niagara to win
Niagara (3-1) held Central Florida (3-1) scoreless in the first four minutes, and didn’t allow a field goal in the final five minutes of the first half. For the game, Central Florida shot just 31.6 percent and turned the ball over 23 times.

  • COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Weiser earns NJAC honor
Buffalo State freshman linebacker Eddie Weiser was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference’s Defensive Rookie of the Year on Friday.

  • HS SOCCER: Taylor, Figler are POYs
Jeannie Taylor and Jeremy Figler, both of Grand Island, are the Niagara Gazette's soccer players of the year for 2009.

  • WOMEN'S HOCKEY: NU ties top-ranked Mercyhurst
Jocey Kleiber buried the equalizer as Niagara tied Mercyhurst, the nation's No. 1 team, 2-2 on Friday night in Dwyer Arena.

  • HS FOOTBALL: NT's line ready for Baldwinsville
When North Tonawanda lines up against the Baldwinsville Bees in tonight’s Class AA state semifinal, the Lumberjacks will be looking square into the eyes of the biggest linemen they’ve seen all year. Casey Shreve says bring it on.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: NU tops Howard at Wilkes Classic
Niagara’s first-half shooting percentage almost matched the temperature outside Friday morning. The Purple Eagles shot 71.4 percent from the field in the opening half and 57.1 percent for the game in an 82-77 win over Howard at the Glenn Wilkes Classic.

  • COLLEGE ROUNDUP (Nov. 19): Bulls shoot better in first win

  • GOLF: Lewiston's Silver climbing senior ladder
After a big win in the inaugural Chechessee Creek Senior Invitational in Okatie, S.C., Silver has jumped to No. 7 in the Golfweek/Titleist senior amateur rankings. That puts the Niagara Falls Country Club member on pace for his best season ever, and with two tournaments left on the schedule, Silver is even hoping to crack the nation’s top five.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Purple Eagles fly south for busy weekend
With three games in three days against fellow mid-major conference competition, the Glenn Wilkes Classic provides Niagara an early preview of the all-important Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament in March.

  • INSIDE COLLEGE HOCKEY: Second part with Niagara AD Ed McLaughlin
We continue our discussion with College Hockey America commissioner Ed McLaughlin with a look at Niagara’s hockey program and next year’s move to college hockey. This is the second half of the interview.

  • MEN’S HOCKEY: Niagara finally gets over hump, beats RPI
Wednesday proved to be hump day for the Niagara University men’s hockey team in more ways than one.

  • COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Thermilus leads Bulls past Miami
University at Buffalo tailback Brandon Thermilus ran it 11 times for 126 yards and two scores and added a 29-yard touchdown reception the Bulls beat Miami (Ohio) 42-17 in a Mid-American Conference football contest on national television Wednesday.

  • MEN'S BASKETBALL: Niagara beats Drexel before lunch
Once they woke up Tuesday, the Niagara University Purple Eagles looked a lot like the men’s basketball team that won 26 games last year.
Only deeper. And a bit hungrier.

  • TIM'S TAKE: Murphy, Layden pass torch to Mihalich’s team
Silver might have been the color most prevalent Tuesday at Niagara University — from the Purple Eagles’ new uniforms, Frank Layden’s all-salt-and-no-pepper mane, to the pinstripes in Calvin Murphy’s black suit. But while silver shaped the mood, the morning was simply golden.

  • NU BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: Mihalich uncertain when Lewis will return
Niagara coach Joe Mihalich said the bulky walking boot that Tyrone Lewis is wearing makes his injury look worse than it is, but didn’t sound confidant that the senior guard will be back on the court by the end of the week.

  • UB FOOTBALL: Bulls still have something to play for — win at Miami
The University at Buffalo football team will look for its first win at Miami’s Yager Stadium tonight in a game to be televised on ESPNU.
