SCHMITT: Rivet on 'clunker': not acceptable

BUFFALO — At one point during Sunday’s third period, Craig Rivet found himself stranded with the puck in the offensive zone, a guy as out of place as an English Lit professor at a WWE Smackdown. He put his head on a swivel, realized no teammate was close to the offensive zone, and fired a weak shot that Carolina goalie Cam Ward hardly flinched at.

You get the sense that what makes Rivet a talented defenseman and dynamic leader made him a crummy forward.

Nothing but a straight-forward approach. Little creativity.

Few shades of gray.

In the same vain, when the Sabres fell flat on their collective face Sunday night, yielding 47 shots and two points to a team they’re battling against for the final playoff spot, Rivet wasn’t about to take into account the events of the past four days, or the fact that Buffalo snatched two points that looked lost on Friday night.

There was no mincing of words. No dipsy-doodling. Straight ahead.

“(Sunday) was our biggest game of the season and we played probably one of our worst games,” Rivet said, starting a rant in which he seemed to get louder and more angry as he heard himself speak.

“It has nothing to do with the night before. It has to do with (Sunday). They outworked us in every aspect of the game. This is their second game in two nights. They had to travel. And from the very first drop of the puck, they beat us on every single shift the whole night. They worked harder, they played their system better, their special teams were better.

“Absolutely every aspect.”

Rivet’s right, Carolina certainly looked more desperate. After posting 18 shots in the first, the ’Canes added 16 more in the second. Buffalo watched and waited. After trying a goalie switch and another shuffling of lines, Lindy Ruff simply called it a “clunker.”
