Foligno, Kassian assigned to Amerks

BUFFALO — Forward prospects Marcus Foligno, Zack Kassian and Corey Tropp were among the 16 players the Sabres assigned to the AHL Rochester Americans on Monday.

The Sabres also assigned forwards Ales Kotalik, Jonathan Parker, Michael Ryan, Colin Stuart, Phil Varone and Derek Whitmore; defensemen T.J. Brennan, Joe Finley, Brayden McNabb, Shaone Morrisonn, Dennis Persson and Drew Schiestel; goalie Drew MacIntyre.

MacIntyre, Ryan and Stuart must clear waivers. Whitmore passed through Monday. Goalie David Leggio, who was waived Saturday, hasn’t officially been sent down yet.

The Sabres now have 25 players — 15 forwards, seven defenseman and three goalies — in training camp.

Foligno and Kassian, two of the team’s highest-touted youngsters, went pointless in four preseason games each. The 20-years-olds are beginning their first professional seasons.

Meanwhile, the less-heralded Tropp impressed, scoring a goal in three appearances. The 22-year-old had 10 goals, 40 points and 113 penalty minutes last season in Portland.

“It looks like he’s skating as well as I’ve ever seen him skate,” Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said after Tropp scored Friday in Toronto. “He’s got the tools to play. I think he made a big statement that he can definitely add depth to this hockey club.”
