Niagara Gazette covers the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres

SABRES: Carcillo, Emery lead Flyers to 5-2 win

Daniel Carcillo and the rest of Philadelphia’s third- and fourth-line players put up some big numbers against stingy Buffalo.
Carcillo scored twice and Ray Emery made 28 saves to lead the Flyers to their fifth straight victory over the Sabres, 5-2 on Friday night.

  • SABRES: Miller gets shutout in retribution win over Isles
After being shut out by the New York Islanders four days ago, Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres returned the favor.
Miller made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season and 14th overall, and Thomas Vanek had a goal and assist in Buffalo’s 3-0 victory Wednesday night.

  • SABRES NOTEBOOK: Roy finally lights the lamp
After failing to score in the team’s first 11 games, Derek Roy didn’t seem to have any weight lifted off his shoulders after his goal proved the game winner in Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over the New York Islanders at HSBC Arena. But for Roy, a slow start is nothing new

  • BILLS: Byrd soars into rair
As if anything could make his torrid start more incredible, Jairus Byrd told reporters Tuesday that he’s been playing with a sore groin that could be related to the sports hernia injury he had operated on at the onset of training camp.

  • BILLS DVR REWIND: Offense still lacking creativity

  • NHL: Biron, Isles blank Sabres
Martin Biron wore a hard hat and a grin after a big night of milestones for the New York Islanders. As a reward for earning 200th NHL win and 26th career shutout, Biron donned the Islanders’ informal reward for the player of the game.

  • SABRES: Connolly's OT goal lifts Buffalo past Toronto
Tim Connolly scored a power-play goal 1:04 into overtime, and Ryan Miller made 33 saves to help the surging Buffalo Sabres beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Friday night.

  • TIM'S TAKE: Leafs keep swinging big — and missing
Hagman’s incredible momentum-swinging pass midway through the second period was the kind of play bad teams suffer through on a nightly basis, and was perfectly representative of the National Hockey League’s richest — and worst — franchise.

  • SABRES NOTEBOOK: Miller’s minutes inching up
The games are already piling up on Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller, who made his ninth start of the season in a 3-2 overtime victory over Toronto on Friday. Miller is expected to be in the nets again tonight when the Sabres open a home-and-home series with the New York Islanders (7 p.m., MSG).

  • SABRES: MacArthur, Kennedy score early in win
Clarke MacArthur and rookie Tim Kennedy scored early in the first period and the Buffalo Sabres remained unbeaten on the road with a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday night.

  • BILLS: Owens upbeat despite ’pathetic’ numbers
Terrell Owens isn’t ready to give back the key to the city just yet.
Though bluntly describing his statistics as “pathetic,” the Buffalo Bills receiver on Wednesday shrugged off suggestions that he’s lost a step in his 14th NFL season. As for the guarantee he made last spring to Buffalo mayor Byron Brown that he’ll score 10 touchdowns this year or give back the key, well, there’s still time.

  • BILLS DVR REWIND: Lynch lucky he didn’t get drilled
Marshawn Lynch hotdogged into the end zone on the first play after Jairus’ Byrd’s first pick. Did Lynch not realize it’s the team’s first rushing touchdown in seven games? He’s lucky he didn’t get a helmet in the ribs.

  • BILLS: Byrd's picks lead to second straight win
Buffalo (3-4) won its second straight despite being outgained 425-167 by getting two more interceptions from Jairus Byrd that set up touchdowns. The Bills recovered Kenny Moore’s fumbled punt late in the fourth quarter and watched John Kasay miss two field goals for Carolina (2-4).

  • Michael D’Apollo

  • NHL: Myers lifts Sabres to shootout win
Tyler Myers scored in the sixth round of the shootout after Drew Stafford tied it late in the third period and the Sabres beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on Saturday night.

  • NFL: TO, Smith meet in matchup of underused star WRs
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Steve Smith and Terrell Owens on the same field. A short, speedy, dominant and sometimes volatile receiver facing off against a tall, speedy, dominant and sometimes volatile receiver.

  • SABRES: First period flurry leads to 5-2 win in Florida
Mike Grier, Jason Pominville and Matt Ellis each scored in the first 5 minutes of a wild opening period to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night.

  • SABRES: Paille traded; Buffalo starts road trip
An ongoing saga surrounding the Sabres this season has been when and where Daniel Paille would get chances to fit into the team’s lineup.
That saga officially ended on Tuesday.

  • BILLS DVR REWIND: Smaller Bills get beaten up, run over
Even the backups the Bills bring in to play for injured starters look undersized, especially on defense.

  • BILLS: Ugly win over the Jets gets Buffalo to 2-4
It was wild, sloppy and not easy to watch. The Buffalo Bills will take it, though, especially when few gave them a chance to beat the New York Jets.
“It feels great to win,” linebacker Paul Posluszny said with a smile. “We needed this big time.”

  • NHL: Sabres fall to Thrashers 4-2
Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice, and Johan Hedberg made 40 saves and added an assist in his first start of the season to help send the Atlanta Thrashers to their best start in franchise history with a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.

  • SCHMITT: Can Paille stay in the lineup?
After sitting out the first four games, Daniel Paille made his season debut Friday during the Sabres’ 6-3 victory, and while he by no means lit the world on fire, he clearly contributed.

  • SABRES: Myers nets first goal in victory
It wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty, but Tyler Myers’ first National Hockey League goal looked good on the scoreboard.

  • SABRES: Miller shines in 6-3 win
Clarke MacArthur scored on a penalty shot, Ryan Miller made 36 saves, and Tyler Myers scored his first NHL goal to help keep the Buffalo Sabres undefeated in regulation with a 6-3 win over the New York Islanders on Friday night.

  • SABRES: Can Buffalo beat bad teams, too?
You’d assume Tuesday’s home date against Detroit, one in which they scored an impressive 6-2 victory on national television over a team that’s played in the last two Stanley Cup finals, was the measuring-stick game for the Buffalo Sabres.

  • BILLS: Defense gets lift as Poz, Whitner practice
Things are finally looking up for the Bills injury-riddled defense, which might finally be getting some needed reinforcements. After losing one starter after another, the Bills were buoyed after safety Donte Whitner and linebacker Paul Posluszny returned to practice Wednesday.

  • BILLS: Williams was solid in Sunday's loss
After he pulled a T.O.-branded T-shirt with the word “iSack” printed on the front over his head, Kyle Williams made yet another impressive stand Sunday.
The Buffalo Bills’ fourth-year defensive tackle somehow tried to take some blame for a 6-3 loss to the previously winless Cleveland Browns.

  • NFL: Injuries mount for inept Bills
If it’s not ineptitude, it’s injuries. The Buffalo Bills can’t get a break in a season that’s quickly going south and has left coach Dick Jauron fending off critics again.

  • BILLS DVR REWIND: Rollouts haven't helped Edwards
Notes collected after a Sunday in which even die-hard Bills fans wish they’d spent their afternoon raking leaves...

  • BILLS: In battle of ineptness, Browns top Buffalo, 6-3
In a game that could only be considered an instant classic on Comedy Central, leave it to punter Dave Zastudil to help secure the Cleveland Browns’ first victory of the season.
