Porter Cup

SCHMITT: Dad helps carry Mitchell to crown

With dad’s calming influence on the bag, Adam Mitchell again looked like the guy who toyed with NFCC the first two rounds. When Mitchell faltered, like on No. 10 where he bogeyed, he quickly regained form. Birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 effectively sealed the victory.....more>>

  • PORTER CUP: Mitchell takes 50th cup title
Only the rain Saturday could’ve kept Mitchell from becoming the 50th Porter Cup champion.

  • PORTER CUP UPDATE: Rain forces another delay
Leaders of the 50th Porter Cup won’t begin their final rounds until 1:50 p.m. Saturday because a storm visited Niagara Falls Country Club around 9:50 a.m. and play was suspended for nearly two hours.

  • PORTER CUP: Sucher makes up seven strokes, ties Mitchell for lead
Zack Sucher used birdies on 16, 17 and 18 — no small feat — to post a second-round 70 and build momentum for a third-round 66 that brought him dead even with Mitchell after being seven shots back at lunch.

  • PORTER CUP: Harvey still having fun
Bill Harvey is known to longtime Porter Cup observers for two things — winning the 1963 championship in a five-hole playoff, the longest tournament in history, and having fun on the course no matter what was going on with his game. He smiled frequently, had fun with the players in his group and interacted with spectators.

  • SCHMITT: Wet isn’t always wonderful at NFCC
Ask Jay Sigel, the only three-time champ in Porter Cup history, why the scores are so low and he’ll give you a quick response.
    “It’s the sprinkler system.”

  • PORTER CUP UPDATE: Sucher, Mitchell tied after round three
Zack Sucher shot a four-under-par 66 on Friday at Niagara Falls Country Club to pull even with Adam Mitchell for the lead at the 50th Porter Cup.

  • PORTER CUP: Rain rolls Round 2 over to Friday
Intermittent storms, matched with the occasional clatter of thunder, caused organizers of the Porter Cup to postpone play during Thursday’s second round, forcing 36 holes of play today with the promise of a better forecast.

  • SCHMITT: Blame it on the rain? No, blame it on Tiger
It’s been 14 years since Tiger Woods spent four days in Niagara County. Woods didn’t win the 1994 Porter Cup, even though he buried an ace during his stay. Still, amateur golfers from around the globe were toiling at Niagara Falls Country Club before sunrise this morning. And Tiger was largely responsible.

  • SCHMITT: Government fuels Aussie golf invasion
Josh Younger sported a baseball cap Wednesday like most of the field during the 50th Porter Cup’s opening round. But truth be told, the Australian would have been happier in something made of straw.
