FIRE CALLS: Niagara Falls fire reports published Nov. 2

For the period of Oct. 14 to 27, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 214 calls. The total number of service calls for 2013 to date is 5,414.

• FIRE: On Oct. 14, Engine 3 and Truck 1 responded to a vehicle fire in the 1600 block of Ontario Avenue.The interior of the 2000 BMW was fully involved in fire upon their arrival and after putting out the fire, damage was estimated at $4,800. The fire remains under investigation. 

• ACCIDENT: On Oct.15, firefighters responded at 5:45 p.m. to a call of a worker falling from scaffolding at a construction site in the 6500 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard. The worker fell approximately 35 feet but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Engine 7 provided stabilizing measures to the patient who was taken to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for further evaluation. 

• FIRE: On Oct. 17, a kitchen fire at 7:50 p.m. in the 2700 block of Orleans Avenue sent a full assignment from Platoon 2 to the scene. Unattended cooking was the cause of the fire. Damage was set at $500.

• FIRE: On Oct. 18, careless attention to a candle, around 11 p.m., started a fire in the 1900 block of Whitney Avenue. Platoon 4 was able to rapidly extinguish the fire and limit the damage to $500.

• FIRE: On Oct. 22, an arson fire was reported at 5:14 a.m. in the 1100 block of Pierce Avenue. Platoon 4 was on the scene for over two hours battling the blaze. Vacant houses on both sides of the fire suffered exposure damage. Total damage was estimated at $16,000. 

• NOTE: Falls firefighters have recently responded to numerous calls for activated carbon monoxide alarms. The normal life-expectancy of a carbon monoxide alarm is five to seven years and some of the calls were caused by "false" readings due to the of the age of the detector. However, never assume you have a false reading. Call 911 and firefighters will check it out.

    Police are investigating a theft from a convenience store in the 2600 block of Niagara Street. A clerk told officers that four suspects, two males and two females, entered the store at 5:32 a.m. Wednesday and one of the women brought several items to the counter and paid for them with a New York state benefit card.

    A Ransomville man with alcohol-related convictions was charged with felony driving while intoxicated Sunday night, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office said.

    A 54-year-old motorcyclist was flown to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight after he collided with another motorcycle on Hartland Road Saturday afternoon.

    A Lockport man was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center after a car-motorcycle collision on Fisk Road Friday afternoon.

    Police are investigating a burglary in the 2500 block of 29th Street. An agent with the CSX Railroad Security Department told officers that sometime between April 4 and noon Monday, someone forced open the door to a storage shed on his company’s property.
