Man rescued from Niagara River

A middle-aged man was treated for back and shoulder injuries after he fell about 9 feet in the Niagara gorge and ended up in the lower Niagara River near the Rainbow Bridge.

Niagara Parks Police Insp. Paul Forcier said police were called at around 3 p.m. Sunday after someone reported seeing a man in the river near the falls.

A police officer was on board a 16-foot boat provided by the Maid of the Mist to respond to the call.

When the officer arrived, Forcier said the man was waist-deep in the water.

"They were able to get him out there and walked back to the Maid of the Mist dock. The boat was used as a precaution," he said.

Paramedics and firefighters responded to the Maid of the Mist dock where he was examined.

Forcier said the man climbed down the gorge at a spot not used by the public. At one point, Forcier said the man fell about 10 feet before making his way to the river's edge.

"We're not sure why he went into the water, but it seems the man has some mental health issues which can be attributed to some of his actions," he said.

Paramedics took the man to Greater Niagara General Hospital where he was treated.
