FIRE CALLS: Niagara Falls fire reports published May 13

For the period of April 29 to May 5, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 157 calls. The total number of service calls for 2013 to date is 2,124.

 
• FIRE: On May 1, Platoon 1 sent a full assignment, at 4:17 a.m., to the 1100 block of LaSalle Avenue for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy fire in the kitchen that had been caused by unattended cooking. Damage was assessed at $20,000 to the building and $10,000 to the contents.

 
• FIRE: On May 2, a call, at 10:50 a.m., of a house fire in the 200 block of 75th Street dispatched Platoon 2 to the scene. A pile of clothes was found on fire in the basement. The cause is still under investigation and damage was estimated at $500. One of the occupants of the home was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.
 
• FIRE: On May 2, a structure fire was called in at 7:51 p.m. for a vacant, unsecured building in the 3600 block of Highland Avenue. Platoon 1 responded and encountered heavy fire conditions. As all utilities had been shut down to the building, there was no accidental means of the fire starting and it was ruled to be intentionally set. Damage was listed at $14,000. A fire on May 3, which occurred at 6:45 p.m. in the same building, resulted in $12,000 more damage. Three firefighters were injured battling these blazes. The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
 
• FIRE: On May 3, Platoon 4 was sent, at 4:05 p.m., to the 1300 block of Pierce Avenue for a report of a structure fire. Firefighters found a blaze in the rear exterior of the house and, after knocking the fire down, damage was pegged at $2,000. The cause of this fire is under investigation.
 
• FIRE: On May 3, Engine 8 responded to a car fire, at 4:20 p.m., in the 1400 block of Fort Avenue. The fire was caused by a malfunction in the engine compartment of a 1998 Buick and damage was estimated at $1,500.
