Upon arrival, firefighters discovered heavy fire in the kitchen that had been caused by unattended cooking. Damage was assessed at $20,000 to the building and $10,000 to the contents.

• FIRE: On May 2, a call, at 10:50 a.m., of a house fire in the 200 block of 75th Street dispatched Platoon 2 to the scene. A pile of clothes was found on fire in the basement. The cause is still under investigation and damage was estimated at $500. One of the occupants of the home was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.
• FIRE: On May 2, a structure fire was called in at 7:51 p.m. for a vacant, unsecured building in the 3600 block of Highland Avenue. Platoon 1 responded and encountered heavy fire conditions. A fire on May 3, which occurred at 6:45 p.m. in the same building, resulted in $12,000 more damage. Three firefighters were injured battling these blazes. The cause of both fires remains under investigation.
• FIRE: On May 3, Platoon 4 was sent, at 4:05 p.m., to the 1300 block of Pierce Avenue for a report of a structure fire. Firefighters found a blaze in the rear exterior of the house and, after knocking the fire down, damage was pegged at $2,000. The cause of this fire is under investigation.
• FIRE: On May 3, Engine 8 responded to a car fire, at 4:20 p.m., in the 1400 block of Fort Avenue. The fire was caused by a malfunction in the engine compartment of a 1998 Buick and damage was estimated at $1,500.
