Wandering cougar caught

A cougar that had been seen wandering north of Grafton all this week was finally captured late Friday night.

The full-sized cougar, believed to be a domesticated cougar that had escaped, had been spotted since Monday wandering in the Cranberry Lake Road area. Grafton is east of Toronto and roughly across Lake Ontario from Rochester.

When the cougar was again spotted Thursday, Ministry of Natural Resources officers were called in to try to capture the cougar, using a trap baited with steak and chicken. They set it up in a resident's yard.

Family members spotted the cougar roaming the yard, resting under the deck of the home, going through a vegetable garden and eventually settling in by a shaded area of the backyard. It eventually went for the steak and chicken and was caught in the trap.

Residents along Cranberry Lake Road said they suspect a man living in the area has a number of wild animals and one claimed seeing him walking a Siberian tiger.

• ACCIDENT: A driver in a crash involving a car and a tractor trailer about 11 p.m. Friday night was flown to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight. Lewiston police and Lewiston No. 2 Fire Co. members responded to the accident on the 1300 block of Saunders Settlement Road. Further details were unavailable.

 • CHARGED: Stephen D. Ababurko, 21, 3144 Kreuger Road, North Tonawanda, was charged with petit larceny on Thursday, according to sheriff's deputies. A manager at a convenience store on Ward Road told deputies that they saw Ababurko twice conceal something under his shirt and leave the store in security footage during the early morning hours of July 6. Employees at the store directed deputies to Ababurko's place of employment, where they were given his home address. Deputies said Ababurko admitted to hiding a tuna sandwich and a 25-ounce can of beer and leaving the store without paying for the items.
