LOCKPORT

Man charged with breaking into cars

A Lockport man was caught breaking into vehicles in the Woodlands Trailer Park on Sunday, the New York State Police said.

Joseph J. Zavarella, 27, Lockport, was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, petit larceny, attempted petit larceny and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

According to police, deputies from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office and State Police responded to a call of a man breaking into cars in the Woodlands Trailer Park and came across Zavarella, who they questioned. Officers said Zavarella not only admitted to breaking into the cars Sunday, but also to stealing $1,000 from an unlocked vehicle Friday. He was also found to be in possession of a pipe with crack residue, police said.

Niagara Falls

• BURGLARY: Police are investigating a burglary in the 1500 block of Ontario Avenue. A 29-year-old woman told officers that sometime between April 12 and 4 a.m. Sunday, someone broke into her apartment by unknown means. The victim said a 42 inch TV, a tablet and a quantity of DVDs and video games were taken.

• THEFT: Officers are looking into an SUV break-in in the 1700 block of Welch Avenue. A 50-year-old man told police that sometime between 10:32 p.m. Saturday and 10:17 a.m.  Sunday, someone took three bed cover panels from his 2002 Chevy Avalanche. Police said the incident was recorded by a surveillance camera.

• BURGLARY: Police are investigating a burglary in the 9300 block of Hennepin Avenue. A 55-year-old man told officers that sometime between 4 p.m. Saturday and 11:32 a.m. Sunday, someone broke into his garage by unknown means. The victim said a generator was taken.

• THEFT: Officers are looking for a female suspect who stole a wallet from a purse at a convenience store in the 2600 block of Niagara Street. Surveillance video shows the woman taking the wallet during an incident at 8:15 a.m. Sunday. The suspect is a black female, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds wearing a dark jacket and blue pants. The suspect is seen leaving the store in a white Cadillac.
