Walnut Avenue crash investigated

Falls Police Traffic Division crash investigators are looking into a one-car accident that left the driver of the vehicle in serious condition.

The accident occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday on Walnut Avenue between 17th and 18th streets. The vehicle rolled over and the driver was ejected. He was rushed to the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo with what were described as serious head injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Barn burner referred to DEC

Two local fire companies responded to a barn fire that was set intentionally by its owner Saturday morning.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a barn fire at 2716 Wilson Cambria Road at 9:23 a.m. Saturday. A responding deputy interviewed the property owner, Mark S. Milley, who took credit for the fire.

“Milley said he started the fire using lighter fluid and was only trying to burn half of the barn down to clear the land,” the deputy’s report said. “Milley was advised of the open burn laws in New York state and (was) told he would be contacted by a DEC officer for a follow up.”

The responding deputy arrived on the scene and found a “partial structure of an old barn engulfed in flames” behind Milley’s house, the report said. Volunteers from the South Wilson and Wilson fire companies put out the fire.

A state Department of Environmental Conservation officer was in touch with Milley around noon Saturday, the deputy reported.

Teen facing sex charges

A Lockport teen has been charged in connection with the sexual assault of a Newfane youth.

Jared A. Person, 18, was charged with first-degree criminal sexual act, a felony, and sexual misconduct Thursday.

A New York State Police investigator received a report from the state Department of Social Services’ Child Abuse Hotline earlier this month regarding the sexual assault of a person younger than 17 years old. Person is accused of assaulting the victim “with force” in Newfane, the agency said in a Saturday press release.
