Speeding stop leads to felony DWI charge

A Ransomville man with alcohol-related convictions was charged with felony driving while intoxicated Sunday night, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office said.

Cody J. Robichaud, 30, 3488 Youngstown-Lockport Road, Ransomville, was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon for a switchblade knife sheriff's deputies found in his pocket. The felony DWI charge stems from Robichaud having a previous driving while intoxicated conviction within the last 10 years.

Robichaud, who was initially pulled over for speeding about 8:50 p.m. on Plank Road, also received tickets for refusing a breath screening device, operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

Deputies noted Robichaud had been convicted of driving while ability impaired in March of 2006 in Cambria and driving while intoxicated in February of 2008 in the Town of Lockport.

Police officer injured in accident

A Town of Tonawanda police officer on his way to a first aid call was injured in an accident on Tuesday, Lt. Nick Bado said.

Officer Mark Scranton was traveling westbound on Highland Avenue at about 11 a.m. when the accident occurred.

"His lights and sirens were on," Bado, citing a video of the collision, said. "He approached the intersection at Colvin Boulevard, slows down to a near stop, and you can see everybody stop. He felt like he was clear to go."

Scranton then proceeded into the intersection, where he collided with another vehicle.

The officer went to the hospital and was treated for a hand injury. Bado was unsure whether Scranton is out of work, but said he workers' compensation paperwork had been filled out.

The driver of the other car, a Chevy Impala, complained of shoulder pain, but was treated at the scene and a call for an ambulance was canceled.

The accident is under investigation and no tickets have been issued yet.
