NEWFANE

Same suspect, same home, new meth lab

Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies raided a suspected meth house in a home on Hope Lane in the Town of Newfane that is no stranger to authorities, who have raided it before.

In January, deputies say they found a meth lab inside the home and arrested two men, charging them with felonies. Tuesday night, it was déjà vu.

“It’s troubling. This whole meth phenomenon is troubling to say the least. Being at the same house in couple month’s time is certainly not something we hoped to see,” Chief Dept. Steven Preisch said.

Sean Smith, 39, was first arrested in January on charges of selling and possessing methamphetamine. His bail was set at $25,000. Niagara County authorities took him into custody at the home on Hope Lane in the Town of Newfane again Tuesday night.

“The gentleman we took into custody is certainly someone who is known to us. And unfortunately, sometimes people who struggle with addictions, the addiction changes who they were or who people thought they were and makes desperate people do desperate things,” Preisch said.

He believes the suspect mainly used the meth lab to feed his own addiction. But Preisch also says Smith sold the drug to make money.

According to authorities, Smith’s girlfriend was taken to the hospital Tuesday and charges are pending for her. Her three children were taken from the home and are in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Smith is now being held on $15,000 bail and deputies say he could face more charges.

Two people were rescued Tuesday afternoon while boating in Lake Ontario, near the Town of Somerset.

Paddling in a rowboat, the pair called for help using a cell phone. Niagara County Undersheriff Michael J. Filicetti said the boat was located between the Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse and the Upstate New York Power Producers plant in Somerset.
