Body found near Niagara Whirlpool

A middle-aged man’s body was recovered from the Niagara Whirlpool Friday morning.

A fisherman on the banks of the lower Niagara River spotted the body at around 8:25 a.m.

Niagara Parks Police and Niagara Regional Police were called and a Whirlpool Jet Boat was used to recover the floating body.

Police spokesman Const. Derek Watson said it’s too early to tell if the man’s death is suspicious or not.

An autopsy will be performed in Hamilton, Ont.

  

Niagara Falls

• INVESTIGATION: Police responded to a reported vehicle accident at 11:28 a.m. Saturday in the 7200 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard. While investigating, officers were approached by an employee of a nearby store who told police three women involved in the accident had just tried shoplifting from the store. She said they were putting items into a big bag and two shopping carts when they were approached by store employees. She said they dropped their items and fled the store on foot. She said the store’s manager didn’t want to pursue charges.

• FIRE: Police were called to a reported structure fire between 2:38 and 4:15 a.m. Saturday in the 1900 block of MacKenna Avenue. Police blocked access to a nearby alley, which fire crews used to extinguish the flames. According to the fire department, damages to the garage and its contents is estimated at $5,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

• ARREST: A Falls man was arrested following an incident involving a motorbike and an all-terrain vehicle at 12:55 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of Linwood Avenue. Anthony Jones, 23, 2231 Niagara Ave., was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, driving an unregistered ATV and several other vehicle and traffic violations after police were able to locate a dirt bike he was allegedly driving. Police said while stopped at Lockport and 11th streets, they heard the sound of an ATV. They located the vehicle and a dirt bike driving on city streets. They were able to track the dirt bike and its driver, Jones, to an alley where Jones was allegedly trying to start the bike back up to elude police. He was handcuffed and taken into custody and the bike towed away. The driver of the ATV was not located.

• ARREST: A Falls man was arrested after an alleged public display of intoxication at 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Ferry Avenue. Daniel Jenneve Sr., 63, 328 Ferry Ave., was charged with restricted use of alcohol in a public place after police allegedly observed him drinking a 40 ounce beer and dancing. Police said he also had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. He was reportedly taken into custody without incident.
