LOCKPORT

Fire destroys barn

Horses and dogs were saved but a small barn and chicken coop went up in flames in a fire about 2:30 p.m. Thursday on Bowen Road. The homeowners were not home, but the house may have sustained siding damage.
Roger Yurek, the assistant chief at Rapids Volunteer Co. said, “We got dispatched for the report of a possible brush fire. The second call reported a building involved. When we got here, there was a 20- by- 30 barn well involved, along with a boat.”
Two horses were led to a relative’s house on the south side of the road and dogs were taken to the house. The cause of the blaze has not been determined, but a steady westerly breeze may have fed the blaze.
The property owners were not at home at the time of the fire which was spotted by their  parents who live on the other side of the road.
As she surveyed the damage, Covel asked about the chickens that were cooped up. The chicks were about three weeks old and there may also have  been ducks on the property.
”There were two horses in the adjacent structure which we got out along with the smaller animals,” Yurek said.
