FIRE CALLS: Niagara Falls fire reports published May 4

For the period of April 15 to 28, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 255 calls. The total number of service calls for 2013 to date is 1,831.

• INCIDENT: On April 15, a full assignment from Platoon 2 was sent, at 9:53 a.m., to Hyde Park Lake for a report of a vehicle in the water. The car was almost completely submerged in the middle of the lake upon the arrival of the crews. Capt. Frank Sillett and Firefighter Dave Seguin donned water rescue suits and waded to the vehicle. Through the open driver’s side door they were able to probe the front interior of the car searching for a possible victim. After finding the front of the car empty, they made their way to the rear window and used a window punch to break the glass and further search the interior of the vehicle. The back of the car was also found to be empty. It was later determined, after the car was dragged from the lake, that it had been “borrowed” from a Buffalo resident and not returned.

• FIRE: On April 18, three engines and a truck were dispatched, at 2:06 a.m., to the 500 block of 19th Street for a report of a building fire. On arrival, firefighters discovered a fire inside an apartment. After putting the fire out, it was determined that the fire was intentionally set and it remains under investigation. Damage was limited to $1,000.

• FIRE: On April 22, Engine 4 responded, at 1:02 p.m., to a report of a state park trolley car on fire on Goat Island. On arrival, firefighters discovered the brakes on the driver’s side rear wheel had overheated and caught fire. Fifteen people were safely evacuated from the trolley and damage was estimated at $1,000.

• FIRE: On April 22, at 10:01 p.m., a deliberately set fire along a fence behind a business in the 3000 block of Niagara Street sent Engine 8 to the scene. The call came about half an hour after a recycling bin was set on fire in the alley of the 2400 block of Forest Avenue. Fire investigators and police are investigating both blazes.
