Shooting suspect surrenders

The suspect in a Sept. 7 shooting outside the Niagara Hotel surrendered to Lockport police Wednesday.

James L. Griggs, 30, 77 Main St., was arraigned Wednesday morning on charges of first-degree assault, second-degree possession of a weapon, criminal use of a firearm and first-degree reckless endangerment. Judge William J. Watson ordered Griggs held at Niagara County Jail on $50,000 cash or $100,000 property bail.

Griggs was accompanied by his attorney, James Faso Jr., when he turned himself in at police headquarters. An arrest warrant for Griggs had been issued in mid-September.

Griggs is charged in connection with the Sept. 7 shooting of a 20-year-old man from Rochester.

Police believed the victim was not a target and was struck accidentally. The victim suffered a non-life threatening single gunshot wound to his shoulder.

The shooting followed a reported early morning melee inside the Niagara Hotel during which multiple shots were fired outside the bar. The incident is still under investigation, Podgers said Wednesday.
