FIRE CALLS: Niagara Falls fire reports published April 20

For the period of April 1 to 14, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 241 calls. The total number of service calls to date in 2013 is 1,714.

• FIRE: On April 1, Platoon 4 was dispatched to B Street at 12:15 p.m. for a report of a structure fire. Bags of garbage along the rear of the house had been set on fire and the fire spread up the siding causing $5,000 damage. Detectives are continuing their investigation.

• FIRE: On April 1, unattended cooking was the cause of a fire at 2:57 p.m. in an apartment complex in the 200 block of Portage Road. Platoon 4 was able to quickly to knock the fire down and limit the damage to $3,000.

• FIRE: On April 7, a large grass fire near the railroad yard off of Porter Road at 6:03 p.m. sent a full assignment to the area. Someone left a bonfire unattended and flying embers ignited the surrounding dry brush in this remote area. Approximately 5 acres of brush were burned and crews were on the scene for two hours to extinguish the fire. As a reminder, open burning is prohibited by state, county, and city ordinances.

• FIRE: On April 8, a sodium leak at an industrial facility on Buffalo Avenue came in contact with a fiberglass wall covering and started it on fire. Platoon 1 responded, at 2:09 p.m., and with the assistance of plant personnel used soda ash and dry chemical extinguishers to mitigate the problem. Water was not used because it reacts violently with sodium. Damage to the structure was pegged at $22,000.

• FIRE: On April 10, a burned out vehicle was discovered by police, at 9:44 a.m., in the 200 block of 15th Street. Fire investigators found evidence of a flammable liquid inside the passenger compartment. This intentionally set fire caused $1,000 damage to the vehicle and remains under investigation.
