A 51-year-old Lockport man has been jailed without bail after police says he stole from his blind 86-year-old mother who was facing eviction from her East High Street apartment.
Charles Rizzo, 51, 799 High St., Apt. 3 was charged with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny Wednesday. The woman, who is legally blind and hearing impaired, is now living in the home of her granddaughter.
According to the police, Rizzo stole money from his mother's bank account. leading to her eviction. The total loss, which included jewelry, was estimated at $5,000.
"The money was used for a drug habit in part," said Lt. Scott Seekins. "He was held without bail because of previous convictions."
Orders of protection were requested for both the victim and her granddaughter because Rizzo threatened them both with retaliation, according to the police report.
Rizzo's mother, who was recently notified she was being evicted from the apartment, contacted her granddaughter. The woman looked into her grandmother's financial statements and found several unauthorized withdrawals from her bank account. Several pieces of gold jewelry and prescription medicines were also missing. A choke necklace was valued at $1,000 and a sapphire ring was valued at $500.
Rizzo was empowered to pay bils for the victim, but never authorized to use accounts to access money for himself, police said.

• BURGLARY: Officers are looking into a burglary in the 2700 block of LaSalle Avenue. A 64-year-old woman told police that sometime between Jan. 22 and midnight Tuesday someone broke into her home by unknown means. The victim said a 32-inch TV and a pair of diamond earrings were taken.
• BURGLARY: Police are investigating a burglary in the 3800 block of Pine Avenue. A 20-year-old man told officers that sometime between 9:30 and 11:50 a.m. Wednesday someone broke into his apartment by unknown means. The victim said a PlayStation 3 game system, three video games, a laptop computer and a gold watch were taken.
