Man flown to ECMC after falling down stairs

Niagara County Sheriff's deputies responded to a Graham Drive home about 3:30 p.m. Saturday after a 79-year-old man fell down 10 to 12 basement stairs.

When deputies arrived, the man was lying on the ground in the basement bleeding from his head and complaining of hip and back pain. Deputies said he was in and out of consciousness as well.

Members of the Wilson Fire Department took the man to a Mercy Flight landing zone. He was then taken to Erie County Medical Center for further treatment.

Taser used on Lockport man during traffic stop

A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy said he was forced to use his Taser during the arrest of a Lockport man on Monday morning.

The deputy said he was on Saunders Settlement Road about 9 a.m. he noticed Brandon M. Howard pass by with the driver's-side view obstructed and holding a cell phone. A check of the vehicle's registration showed it had been stopped within the past week and an arrest was made.

Upon stopping the car, the deputy said Howard gave him the name James Howard and said he did not have his driver's license. A passenger in the car, Becca R. Bliemeister confirmed it but the deputy said when separated, she said his name was James Douglas Howard while he claimed it was James Edward Howard.

Howard eventually told the deputy he goes by Brandon Howard in Lockport. A computer check showed his driver's license was suspended.

While taking Howard into custody, the deputy said Howard, whose left hand was cuffed, began to pull away from him and refused orders to put his hand behind his back. The deputy said in the course of trying to get Howard's hands cuffed, he kneed him in the hip, struck him in he face and eventually used his Taser, which finally allowed the deputy to handcuff Howard's hands.
