Details on stolen car crash released
The three people rescued from a crashed stolen car on Roby Road early Tuesday morning were hospitalized with various injuries.
The 14-year-old driver was taken to Erie County Medical Center with serious leg injuries. A 14-year-old in the passenger seat was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital with leg injuries. They were extricated from the car by Lockport Fire Department and Wrights Corners fire company. A 25-year-old man who was in the back seat was transported to ECMC's intensive care unit with serious facial injuries.
The driver had been driving northbound on Roby Street at a high rate of speed when the car went off the roadway and struck a tree.
Lockport Police reports say that an investigation revealed that the car had been stolen from a South Transit Street location earlier in the morning. An investigation is continuing.
• THEFT: Police are investigating a theft from the 500 block of 15th Street. A 47-year-old woman told officers that sometime between 4 a.m. Monday and 4 p.m. Thursday someone entered her unlocked garage and took her snowblower.
• THEFT: Officers are looking into a theft from the 500 block of Rainbow Boulevard. A 29-year-old woman told police she was expecting to receive a gift card and a check in the mail before Christmas. When the items did not arrive, she checked and found the gift card was used by someone on Dec. 19.
Town of Lockport
• DWI: Joziah P. Hilkey, 22, 7027 Arrowhead Drive, was charged Wednesday with driving while intoxicated, operating an unregistered motor vehicle on a highway and a traffic infraction about 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office. A deputy checking the area of Forestview Drive due to ongoing thefts in the area spotted Hilkey sitting in a car at Forestview and Willow Wood. When they deputy approached, Hilkey drove off but without turning his headlights on. Once stopped, the deputy said Hilkey appeared intoxicated and admitted to have been drinking. He failed field sobriety tests and was charged. A breath test determined his blood alcohol content to be 0.10 percent.
• DWI: Matthew S. Oates, 52, 5786 Lake St., Apt. 225, Olcott, was charged Wednesday with driving while intoxicated, driving on the shoulders of a road and failure to keep right about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office. Oates was stopped after being spotted driving very slowly on Lockport-Olcott Road. A deputy said Oates wouldn't pull over when they pulled up behind him and activated their emergency lights. A second patrol car had to pull in front of Oates to get him to stop. Deputies said Oates appeared very intoxicated and had trouble getting his window down or unlocking the car's door and a deputy had to reach into the car and turn it off and remove the keys. Oates failed two sobriety tests and was unable to perform any more. He refused to take a breath test.
