For the period of May 27 to June 9, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 264 calls. The total number of service calls for 2013 to date is 2,778.

• FIRE: On May 28, an overheated extension cord, at 9:49 p.m., in an apartment building in the 400 block of 17th St. was the cause of a fire that required a full assignment from Platoon 4. Damage was limited to $200, and smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector violations were issued to the owner of the structure.

• RESCUE: On May 30, Platoon 3 responded to a call, at 9:28 a.m., of a man with his leg stuck between two paper rollers at an industrial facility in the 4400 block of Royal Avenue. After freeing the man, crews treated him on the scene for his significant injuries and he was transported to the Trauma Unit at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.

• RESCUE: On June 2, Engine 3 and Truck 1 were sent, at 3:42 p.m., to the 1200 block of Wyoming Avenue for a report of a vehicle rollover accident. The Engine 3 crew, which consisted of Capt. Jason Zona and Firefighters Paul Pearson, Tim Kennedy, and Josh Mayes, was able to free a victim from the twisted wreckage. The victim was stabilized and taken to a local hospital for further treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

• FIRE: On June 4, a tractor-trailer ran over a box spring mattress, at 9:02 a.m., on the I-190. The debris remained lodged in the rear wheels, creating a fire there in the 6100 block of Niagara Falls Boulevard. Engine 7 and Truck 2 responded and put the fire out. Damage was pegged at $2,000.

• FIRE: On June 4, a truck fire, at 12:06 p.m., near the toll booths on the north Grand Island Bridge required a Mutual Aid response from the Niagara Falls Fire Department. The Grand Island Fire Department was blocked from the scene by backed-up traffic. The fire was caused by a broken hydraulic line. Engine 7 had to go over the wrong side of the bridge to access the fire and extinguish it.
