BLOTTER: Police reports published July 15

Police officer bit by dog

A City of Tonawanda police officer was bit by a dog on Saturday afternoon.

"We were a little concerned because the dog does not have its rabies shots," Capt. Fred Foels said.

The officer, Joseph Rank II, responded to a call regarding a loose dog at 1 p.m. on Saturday. By the time the officer reported to the area, near Bouck and Hill streets, two children were in possession of the 1-year-old German shepherd.

"As he was speaking to the boys about what happened, the dog made a leap and bit him in the hand. The officer stepped back, and the dog lunged again and bit him in the upper thigh," Foels said.

Rank, one of the department's newest officers, was taken the hospital and treated for puncture wounds. He also received a tetanus shot and was advised to follow up with his physician.

The department's animal control officers were called and placed the dog in a 10-day quarantine. State laws require that dogs without the vaccination who have bit a person be placed in the quarantine. A rabies-infected animal can only transmit the disease after clinical signs have developed.

If the dog, whose owners live on Fletcher Street, lives past the 10 days or does not exhibit signs of the disease, it was likely not spreading the disease at the time of the bite, and the officer will probably not be in need of further treatment.

Business burglarized early Monday morning

The Wet Vapes on South Transit Road was burglarized about 12:20 a.m. Monday, Lockport police said.

According to the department's Facebook page, the suspect entered the building through the ceiling of the store and exited through the front door. The store's cash drawer, valued at $170 with approximately $200 in cash in it, was stolen.
