BLOTTER: Police reports published July 23

(Continued)

“It was a very taxing afternoon, but everything worked out,” said Mark Acker, platoon chief with the Niagara Falls Fire Department. “Everyone involved was exposed to poison ivy so they all had to shower and change their clothes. All of our equipment, our ropes, our harnesses and baskets all had to be washed.”

The rescue call was received at about 11 a.m. regarding a 54-year-old man who was injured while hiking in the Whirlpool.

“There was a group of people hiking and they got split up. The male came off the trail and he tried to climb up. He got part way up and injured himself so that he couldn’t go up or down,” said Acker.

A crew of firefighters, along with a pair of paramedics, went down and located the victim. He was strapped onto a stretcher and was carried out of the gorge about 200 feet.

“Everybody is OK and the patient was not severely injured as far as we know,” said Acker. “It was pretty muddy down there from all the rain we’ve had and if you get off the trail you are done.”

The rescue operation took about two hours.
