LOCKPORT

Woman who sped away from traffic stop caught

It took a few weeks but Lockport police have a arrested a woman who they said sped away from a traffic stop in June, driving nearly 100 mph on South Transit Road and nearly hitting several cars.

Jeanine L. Burton, 6558 Lincoln Ave., Apt. 5, was charged with speeding, failure to obey a traffic control device, reckless driving, two counts of passing a red light, two counts of failure to signal, failure to keep right, unsafe lane change, failure to yield to emergency vehicle, aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing police and obstructing governmental administration.

According to the report, Officer Steve Tarnoski was running radar on Summit Street on June 26 when an SUV went by traveling 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Tarnoski activated his emergency light and attempted to make a stop.

Burton went right on a red light at South Transit and continued at a high rate of speed, reaching near 100 mph, while committing other traffic infractions. She then went through a light at Strauss Road, almost striking several vehicles, and another red light at Robinson Road, almost hitting other vehicles before Tarnoski gave up the chase.

A witness called the police station, reporting a black SUV sped down his street and he saw a man fleeing from the vehicle. Police responded to Village Home Mobile Park and located the SUV at the end of Meadow Lane Drive. The SUV was not occupied, but a pair of ladies flip-flops were found outside the driver’s door.

The Buffalo man who fled the SUV was located outside Mike Smith Buick and taken back to Meadow Lane where he was identified. The SUV had been rented to a Lancaster man.

Burton was arrested by Officer Anthony Pittman on at 8 p.m. Friday at a traffic stop on High Street on an active arrest package.
