TONAWANDA
Child struck by car in town
A child was struck and seriously injured while riding a bicycle across Delaware Road at Sheridan Drive in the Town of Tonawanda Thursday afternoon.
Town police declined to release any details about the accident or the severity of the child's injuries.
Witnesses said the child was struck by an unidentified woman driving a Pontiac Vibe. The child and bicycle were pinned beneath the car and several passers-by rushed to lift the vehicle off the boy. Two of those who stopped to help were identified as Jason Eulrich and Raymond Marello III.
Witnesses said the child suffered serious injuries and possibly broken legs. It was unclear what other injuries he may have sustained.
The accident scene was closed to traffic for much of Thursday evening as police accident reconstruction investigators tried to piece together what happened to cause the collision.
The boy's badly mangled bicycle was left sitting on the side of Delaware Road as witnesses spoke to police about what happened. The female driver who struck the boy remained at the scene and appeared visibly shaken following the incident.
Desk officers at the police station said department spokesman Lt. Nick Bado is expected to offer more details on the incident today.
