Fugitive from Florida caught at bridge

A 26-year-old Canadian man wanted in Florida on a 2011 felony battery charge was taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge on Sunday.

Richard Hanes, a resident of Petersborough, Ont., was caught while trying to enter the U.S. The felony battery warrant was issued in 2011 after Hanes failed to return there after posting a $10,000 bond.

Once Customs agents verified the warrant and confirmed extradition, Hanes was taken into custody and turned over to the New York State Police.

WHEATFIELD

Heroin turned over after traffic stop

A Falls man was arrested after he turned over a quantity of heroin during a traffic stop on Plaza Drive Saturday night.

A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy keeping watch on a Plaza Drive convenience store due to a recent rash of robberies watched a black Pontiac pull into the business' parking lot and park out of sight of the front window at which point a man walked to the entry door, momentarily peer inside, then remove items from a cigarette disposal tray.

The deputy stopped the man, Kenneth S. Edwards, 31, 6381 Walmore Road, upper, Niagara Falls, a short distance away. He appeared very nervous and the deputy eventually found several small wax paper folds containing heroin. A search of the car didn't turn up anything further.

Edwards was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
