FIRE CALLS: Niagara Falls fire reports published May 25

For the period of May 6 to 19, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to 280 calls. The total number of service calls for 2013 to date is 2,404.

• FIRE: On May 6, Engine 8 responded to a large brush fire, at 7:36 p.m., at Gill Creek Park. A witness observed three youths that apparently started the fire fleeing the scene. Fire and police investigators are in the process of interviewing these suspects.

• FIRE: On May 10, a fully involved car fire, at 3:52 p.m., sent Engine 4 and Truck 1 to the 1800 block of Pierce Avenue. Arson is suspected in this fire, which started in the passenger compartment of a 1998 Pontiac. The fire remains under investigation and damage was estimated at $2,000.

• ACCIDENT: On May 11, a two car accident, at 8:46 p.m., required Engine 4 and Engine 3 to go to the 1700 block of Calumet Avenue. Four people were stabilized with cervical collars and backboards before being transported to local hospitals.

• FIRE: On May 12, Platoon 3 was sent to the 500 block of 75th Street, at 4:08 p.m., for a chimney fire. A creosote build-up in the flue of a wood burning stove was the cause of the fire. A reminder: fireplace and wood burning stove flues should be regularly inspected and serviced.

* FIRE: On May 14, a large fire, at 5:19 p.m., at a junkyard in the 4800 block of Lockport Road required a full assignment from Platoon 4. Crews remained on the scene for five hours battling the blazing wood pallets and junk cars. Investigators believe the fire may have been set by vandals.
