Injured man pulled from gorge

Niagara Parks Police were called to the lower Niagara Gorge near the Niagara Glen about 2 p.m. Sunday for a report of a man who had fallen while hiking in the gorge.

By 2:30, members of the Niagara Parks Police Service, Niagara Falls Fire Department and Niagara EMS were able to locate the injured man near the waters edge on the Niagara River. He had sustained a large cut to his forehead and separated his shoulder.

The man was immobilized with the aid of a rescue litter and carried from the gorge. The 52-year-old Toronto resident was transported to the Greater Niagara General Hospital for further medical treatment.



Niagara Falls

• ARREST: A Falls man was arrested after a violent encounter with police outside a Third Street nightclub. Michael Anthony McTyere, 36, 1316 Niagara Ave., was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, driving while intoxicated, unsafe backing, disorderly conduct and unlawful possession of marijuana. Police said McTyere tried to drive away from a fight outside a Third Street nightclub at 2:30 a.m. Sunday and almost ran over an officer. He was stopped a short distance away and taken into custody. Officers said McTyere failed several field sobriety tests and refused a Breathalyzer test. He also had a quantity of pot in his possession at the time of his arrest.

• ARREST: A Grand Island man was arrested after an incident in the 400 block of Third Street at 1:55 a.m. Sunday. Anthony B. Weber, 27, 2113 Bedell Road, was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree criminal impersonation and second-degree obstructing governmental administration. He was also charged on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court on a drunken driving charge. Police said they stopped Weber after he smashed a plate glass window at a Third Street business with his fists. Weber reportedly gave them a fake name and then was uncooperative with booking officers at the city jail.

• ARREST: A Falls man was arrested on a drug-related charge. Christopher M. Leftwich, 33, 3204 Hyde Park Blvd., was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. Police said Leftwich was in a car behind a bar in the 1600 block of Pine Avenue at 1:35 a.m. Sunday, smoking a marijuana-laced cigar. He had more than 7 grams of pot in his possession.

• ARREST: A Falls man was arrested after a traffic stop in the area of 11th Street and North Avenue at 9 p.m. Saturday. Charles E. Matthews, 58, 2006 10th St., was charged with first-degree loitering, second-degree obstructing governmental administration and tampering with physical evidence. Police said Matthews was a passenger in a car stopped for a traffic violation. While officers were conducting an investigation, Matthews swallowed what appeared to be a small quantity of crack cocaine.

• BURGLARY: Police are investigating a burglary in the 500 block of 12th Street. A 39-year-old man told officers sometime between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 2 p.m. Sunday someone broke into his garage by damaging a door. The victim said a lawnmower, a snowblower and some power tools were taken.

• BURGLARY: Officers are looking into a burglary in the 2500 block of Pine Avenue. A business owner told police sometime between 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday someone broke into his hair salon through a side window on the building. The man said two pairs of hair clippers were taken.

• ASSAULT: Police are preparing to charge a suspect who assaulted three women outside a Third Street nightclub at 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The victims told police the suspect punched two of them and pushed another of them to the ground, injuring all of them. Officers say a suspect in the case has been identified.
