POLICE REPORTS: June 27, 2009

WHEATFIELD

Guide dog injured during attack

Two dogs reportedly got loose from a Ferchen Road home Thursday morning and attacked a neighbor’s German shepherd guide dog.

A witness called deputies and said she saw her neighbor’s pit bull, Romeo, and brindle mix, Vern, attack her other neighbor’s guide dog, Prince.

Prince’s owner told deputies he had just started walking back from the road after taking out the garbage when the two dogs attacked his dog.

The man’s wife said the dogs had a hold of Prince’s right rear leg and ripped away a piece of flesh before they were scared off by her, her husband and another resident.

Prince was taken to an animal hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery, the report said.

His owner told deputies Prince is worth about $40,000.

The owner of the two dogs told deputies she did not know how her dogs got out.

The SPCA secured the two dogs, and the dog control officer was notified, the report said.

The investigation is continuing, and charges may be filed.

• BURGLARY: Officers are looking into a burglary in the 2100 block of Seneca Avenue. A 20-year-old woman told police that between 11 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday, someone broke into her home by prying open a window. The vehicle left, but then returned about two and a half hours later. The driver, described as a white male, about 6 feet tall, 250 lbs, with gray hair, was wearing business attire, the report said. He reportedly asked the woman for directions. While she was giving him directions, she reportedly noticed his arm moving and realized he was touching himself. The woman said she took her children inside the house and later called 911. The vehicle was described as a late-model pickup with a gray interior.
