Students report

incident Wednesday

Four GJ Mann Elementary School students reported to police that they were approached by a man in a truck on their way to school Wednesday morning.

The youths said an older, overweight white man with gray hair, a mustache and beard in a red Dodge approached the youths as they were riding their bikes to school in the 1100 block of 90th Street. The man asked them if they wanted cans and bottles to return to the store for deposit money.

The youths declined and took off to school. One of the youths said the man then got out of his vehicle and opened the trunk.

The students later reported the incident to a teacher, at which point the police were called.

PENDLETON

Woman injured in industrial accident

A Lockport woman’s hand was impaled by a wrench after an industrial accident at a Campbell Boulevard business Wednesday.

Sheriff’s deputies said Susan Schlemmer, 62, of Prospect Street, an employee of Pivot Punch Corp., was injured about 11:17 a.m. She was checking the depth of a part she had just drilled with what she thought was a drill bit, but was actually a 3/16 Allen wrench, which she had grabbed by accident.

The lathe “grabbed” the Allen wrench, causing it to be impaled through Schlemmer’s right palm, just below her fingers, the report said. The wrench is about 3 inches long and went in the entire length.

She was taken to Erie County Medical Center.

TOWN OF LOCKPORT

‘Flim flam’ artist alert issued

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Department is warning local businesses to look out for a pair of “flim flam” artists that are targeting cashiers.

The suspects have conned at least two cashiers at Lockport restaurants into exchanging money with them, confusing them into giving out more change than is required.

On Monday, a manager at Quiznos Subs on South Transit Road reported that an employee had been shortchanged for $100 after a middle-aged black man with a thin build bought a cookie and paid for it with a $20 and then asked her for various amounts of change.

On Tuesday, an employee at Tim Hortons on South Transit Road reported they were scammed out of about $63 during a transaction. A video of the incident showed the suspect was with another man who was distracting other customers in line.

The sheriff’s department is advising businesses to report any suspicious activity by calling 438-3393. Anyone with information about the two recent incidents is asked to call the criminal investigation bureau at 438-3327.
