LETTERS FROM THE ISLAND: Here's a few things to chew on

Niagara Gazette — Dear Mainland Munchers — Never saw a May Day that felt more like a distress signal, but for now, it’s all about the food.

HOW NOW, WOW COW – There’s one less mandatory Mainland trip now that Adrian’s, our geographical bulls eye, has begun swirling out Wow Cow.

We’re not certain what’s in Wow Cow, but it’s a yogurt-like treat claiming around 50 calories per serving, available only at Nina’s on Millersport Highway until now. Once a week around twilight we’d find some excuse for a twilight run to Getzville for the likes of vanilla malt and chocolate decadence.

Suddenly, it showed up on the menu at Adrian’s. Doug brought home a boatload, literally, delicious, even though the strawberry shortcake flavor-of-the-week isn’t Polly’s favorite.

Nina’s usually offers two flavors. Adrian’s will stick with one at a time. We’ll check. Heck, it’ll cost us less for a cone than the gas it takes to get to Getzville.

CAUGHT SHORT — The Lions Club ran out of meatballs at Monday’s community dinner. If we’d stopped for a second salad, we’d have been shut out. Biggest crowd we ever saw at this event, including a wondrous squadron of high schoolers and Scouts who ran errands for their elders, all in good cheer, not a hint of condescension. Looks as if there’s hope for the future after all. Buy ‘em all a Wow Cow.

VOTES FOR OATS — A few weeks ago a company called Grainful sent us four samples of their frozen entrees, from Ithaca, last hangout for hippies in Upstate New York. They featured steel-cut oats, the very center of the oat kernel and a prime ingredient in porridge, a favorite with bears and blondes.
