DELUCA: NFHS video is so 'Happy

Niagara Gazette — The other day I asked everyone who happened to be in the newsroom to watch a video that has made me smile every time I’ve watched it over the last week.

And no, it wasn’t the talking dog on You Tube or the dancing grandma or even the kitty that chases off a dog that was attacking her boy.

The video I’m referring to was even better — produced by the senior class at Niagara Falls High School. It simply made me happy.

In the interest of fairness, it did not have the same effect on all of my newsroom colleagues. But at least one of them told me that the video made him happy too, and he’s the grumpiest one, so I don’t feel like I am overstating it to say that if you want an enjoyable four minutes and more than a little spark of hope for the future of the world, take a look at what is called a “lipdub,” made by the senior class.

But first, let me explain what a lipdub is. It’s a video of a group of people who lip-sing to a popular song, usually with a single unedited video shot taken by a cameraman who travels through different rooms of a building or down a variety of streets. Typically, it’s a carefully planned effort to get as many faces in the spotlight as possible, even if for just a few seconds.

If you really want to kill some time online, search lipdubbing. What you’ll find is a lot of a highly entertaining music videos with lots of average people looking like they’re having a really great time.

And that’s the thing about the lipdub produced by the senior class this year. The first time I watched it I was mesmerized by the joy in the students faces. There were hundreds of them participating and it is the most exuberant, inclusive and myth-busting piece of digital entertainment I’ve watched in a long time.
