BRADBERRY: Celebrate our historic women of distinction

Niagara Gazette — March is Women’s History Month.

It’s completely understandable; when you think about Niagara’s Historic Women of Distinction, Annie Edson Taylor leaps directly over the barrels to the forefront, but there are others whose feats accomplished a heck of a lot more on land than Annie ever did on water.

Now, don’t get me wrong; I’m just as proud of our “heroic” daredevils as anybody else, but there are a few other real heroes who accomplished some things that actually benefitted all human kind, more so than did their own self-promotion.

There is plenty of room here within walking distance in the city and hiking distance along our 11-mile stretch of natural gorge waterfront to demonstrate our appreciation for both sorts of daredevils including those undeniably brave women (and men) who heroically faced the water as well as those who unselfishly faced the times.

Isn’t it about time that we recognize and demonstrate our appreciation for all of them?

The dtate Senate has an impressive exhibit on display in Albany this month, Women of Distinction: Honoring Women’s History Month through March 31; it sheds light on the long list of nationally famous women who passed through New York State, some through Niagara Falls on their way to their rightful place in the chronicles, school text books, statuary and street signs around the state to righteous recognition and well-earned historic glory.

Curiously though, none have yet found their proper place here in Niagara Falls, N.Y. where millions of inquisitive tourists come to see and experience all things Niagara every year from all over the world. Isn’t it just as likely that our guests would be just as interested in and curious about our famous ladies as they are about our Tesla?

I think so.
