HAMILTON: I am afraid for what America’s become

When I was 17, I traipsed off, joined the Navy and went off to fight in Vietnam. My dad cried as he sighed the papers that permitted me to go. I went because I had more testosterone than brains. Now I hope that I have gotten smarter because the equation has flip-flopped and my sons are of the age, brightness and fitness to serve in the military. I have thought about it and have already nearly teared about those prospects.

BRADBERRY: Practice what you preach

It was just another one of those conversations, but it was deep. It took us back, way back, all the way back to the beginning where it all started for us, MacKenna Avenue on the city’s southeast side.

CONFER: The cost of cap and trade: Part 1

Sitting near the top of the Left’s ambitious agenda is the tempering of alleged man-made global warming. The Democrat-controlled Congress and Obama administration hope to achieve this goal through a variety of tactics which include green energy incentives, stricter environmental regulations and the absolutely ludicrous concept of cap and trade.

Last week we had a little background on neighborhood conditions and changes that are under way to educate the residents that the city would “no longer take a passive approach to these problems.”

If anything, listening to the five candidates for the three open Niagara Falls City Council seats discuss the current state of Niagara Falls, you can’t help but feel things are finally starting to look up around here.

HAMILTON: Halloween: A brutha with a job

On Halloween, some 20 years ago, after leaving the Buffalo Avenue DuPont plant and still dressed in my work clothes, I stopped at what was then the Uni-Mart store on Hyde Park Boulevard and Lafayette Avenue. Costumed kids were trick-or-treating there. When it was my turn at the counter, just for fun, I too said “Trick-or-treat.”

BRADBERRY: Where shopping Is a pleasure?

I knew I was in trouble as soon as I stepped up on the chair to take the sheer summer curtains down, so without even trying to do what I knew would be impossible, I called for help.

HAMILTON: A lesson provided by city settlements

If I am wrong, then I like to be the first one to admit it. Usually, I don’t have that luxury, because by the time that I discover that I was wrong, sometimes hundreds of other people have already whispered it behind my back.

CONFER: The decline of the dollar

On Oct. 6, The Independent, a newspaper based in the United Kingdom, issued a shocking report that said Gulf Arabs, along with the leaders of China, Russia, Japan and France, have been meeting in secret to develop a plan that would abandon the dollar as the unit of trade for oil.

I guess it’s OK to be proud of an accomplishment you were involved in even if it was only slightly. When just looking at it makes you feel good, that is probably reason enough.
