LETTERS: Memorial Day ceremony Sunday

Niagara Gazette

Memorial Day ceremony Sunday

Throughout the country, as tradition has it, Americans join together to remember those who have sacrificed their lives upon the altar of freedom. With community parades and memorial ceremonies, Americans will nonetheless join together to pay respect for our soldiers, Marines, sailors and Airmen honored dead of our nation’s wars.

On Sunday, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 54 will conduct a ceremony placing flags upon the graves of veterans at Riverdale Cemetery. The Niagara Falls Junior Military League Cadets will provide the honor guard during the presentation of colors. The Cadets, as part of the VFW’s Youth Citizenship Education Program, Post No. 917 will meet at 9 a.m. at Post No. 54 on Main Street. After a brief gathering, Cadets will travel to Riverdale.

The public is invited to attend. Families of veterans are encouraged to join with us during this time of remembrance.

All are to blame in Wilson

Where does a high school student even get the notion to commit this kind of crime? Because they think they can get away with it? I have heard “It’s the parents’ fault.” Also, “It’s the coaches’ fault.” It’s all of their faults! First and foremost, the students (perpetrators) should definitely be prosecuted to the fullest. But there is a much deeper problem. Parents: Adolescents need to be taught from an early age that in this world, you cannot always have what you want or do what you want. There is always someone to answer to. Coaches need to lay down the law and not waiver. Disrespect, low morals, lacking principles will not be tolerated. No matter who you are or how good you are at your given sport. It’s this way or the highway. Athletic director, principal, teacher all need to reinforce these ideals in and outside of the classroom.

Too many are worried about enrollment or having a winning sports program when they should be concentrating on not only teaching academics, but maybe more importantly, teaching young people how to act in our society. Teaching that there are consequences for not behaving properly. For every action there is a reaction and if the reaction is punishment, so be it. Life!

Again, the students and coaches should pay dearly. There is no one on this earth that can tell me this incident on the bus was not seen or heard by the coaches. Please! Either way, the coaches didn’t do their jobs. To repeat, they are all to blame. Take a look at our society. It is failing.
