Lillias MacGregor Tufts


Lillias MacGregor Tufts, a longtime resident of Lewiston, NY, died peacefully at the Belle Haven Nursing Home in Quakertown, PA, on Thursday, February 21, 2013. She was 88. Her daughter and youngest son, Joan Tufts Metter and Roger Wallace Tufts, were with her.
Born on July 21, 1924, in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the second of three children born to Lillias and Wallace MacGregor, both of Scotland. She received her under graduate degree in chemistry and biology from William Smith College in 1945. Upon graduation, Lillias returned to Niagara Falls and worked in a research laboratory at Hooker Chemical Corporation. There, she met her future husband, Lewis Everett Tufts. They married on December 27, 1947 at her home on Buffalo Avenue in Niagara Falls. Shortly thereafter, she left the research laboratory to raise a family. They settled in Lewiston in 1949.
Lillias belonged to First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston for more than 50 years and was a member of the Tattler Club. In their retirement year, Lillias and Lewis very much enjoyed traveling around the United States and spending winters in Nokomis, Florida, where they formed cherished memories of visits by family and friends. Lillias also traveled with traveled with family and friends, to Scotland, England and continental Europe.
Lillias will be lovingly remembered by her four children, Scott A. Tufts of Austin, Texas, Joan Tufts Metter of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, Alan L. Tufts of Lewiston, New York, and Roger W. Tufts of McLean Virginia. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Lewis Tufts, Lillias's husband of 61 years, passed away in 2008.
A Memorial Service in the couple's honor and their interment will take place in June in Lewiston.
