June Rose Elizabeth Mayes

SUN CITY, AZ — June Rose Elizabeth (Shumway) Mayes passed away peacefully on November 4, 2012 in Sun City, Arizona.  From the moment of her birth on June 14, 1939, she was known only by her nickname, Pete.

Pete was born at home on a farm on Patton Hill outside of Towanda, PA. Her parents were       Durland W. Shumway and Fannie Melissa (Campbell) Shumway. She attended elementary school in Athens, PA, and graduated from Towanda High School. In 1959, she was married to Stanley M. Mayes of Niagara Falls, NY. They lived in New York State for several years, but then moved to Arizona in 1972. Pete loved the warm weather. She was a real homemaker and enjoyed keeping a beautiful home.

In addition to her husband, Stanley, Pete is survived by her son, Geoffrey M. Mayes (wife, Lisa); and six grandchildren, Doran, Madalyn, Alexandria, Landon, Taylor and Violet. She is     survived by one sister, Jacqueline (Jac) and was predeceased by sisters, Wilma (Billie) and Barbara (Bobbie); and one brother, Durland (Bud). She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Sara, widow of  Bud; and by her brother-in-law, Walter E. Wilson, widower of Bobbie.

Memorial services will be held in the spring of 2013 at Mountain Lake Cemetery in Pennsylvania, where she will be buried next to her beloved   brother, Bud.
