Ellen H. Bird


Ellen H. Bird, 97, of Sanborn, NY, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2013, in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, Lewiston, NY. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY on October 3, 1916, the daughter of the late Albert and Effie (Goodliff) Huckabone.
Mrs. Bird graduated from LaSalle High School in 1935 and from the Kelly Business Institute in 1936. She was a  teller with Niagara Permanent Savings and Loan from 1936 to 1955 and later with M&T Bank on Military Road from 1964 until retiring in 1981. Mrs. Bird served as President of the United Methodist Women for both the Sanborn  and Hope United Methodist Churches for over 20 years. She was also active at both churches coordinating rummage sales, dinners and bazaars. Mrs. Bird was a member of the Sanborn American Legions Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Bird was a kind and caring person who was always there to listen, give advice and help in all the ways she could.
She was the wife of the late Walter C. Bird, who died in December of 2008. They were married on May 6, 1950. Mrs. Bird is survived by a daughter, Cheryl L. (Rev. Brian Rotach) Bird of Amherst; a granddaughter, Rachel Rotach, a "second daughter" Marcia (Dennis) Lewis and several nieces and cousins. She was the sister of the late Ruth (John) Gorka. The family would like to thank the compassionate and  loving staff on 3 East of Our Lady of Peace for the wonderful care they gave to Ellen.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:00 PM at Hope United Methodist Church, 2914 Upper Mountain Road, Sanborn, NY, with the with Rev. Matthew  Kofahl officiating. Memorials may be made in her name to the Hope United Methodist Church. Interment at Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. Arrangements were made through the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, SANBORN, NY.
