Gerald Slipko, 68, of Lewiston, NY, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2013 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital with family members by his side.
Gerald or "Jerry" as he was called was a lifelong resident of the area and attended local schools. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business from Bowling Green State University in Ohio where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. During the Vietnam War, Jerry was with the National Guard. He was honorably discharged as a Spec 4 Sergeant. On June 24, 1967 he married Elaine C. (Gotch) Slipko at St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church in Cleveland, OH. He was a beloved and wonderful husband.
Jerry was part owner of Slipko's Food King. He had a heart of gold and gave many young people their first jobs. He was one of, if not the first to employ disabled people. In fact, he received an award in 1982 as Employer of the Year by the Community Vocational Rehabilitation Center. After selling Slipko Brother's, Jerry was a store manager for Tops Markets and most recently a retail manager for Smokin' Joe's.
Jerry loved sports. An avid bowler and golfer, Jerry was an original member of Tan Tara Country Club. He was extremely proud of his hole in one in a Niagara Falls golf tournament. Jerry also loved boating and fishing. You could find him and his wife and family at the Lewiston docks and more recently, the Youngstown docks enjoying the people and the outdoors. He absolutely loved meeting and getting to know people. Soon after meeting him, people discovered what a kind and generous man he was with a keen sense of humor. Jerry loved to travel and did so extensively throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. He was a founding member of the friends of Niagara University Theater helping to produce many of the annual galas. Jerry also was an owner of Quad Productions and presented many community theater productions. Sometimes, you could even find him on the stage. Jerry will be most remembered as a dedicated family man. He was very proud of his family and their accomplishments and made it known to whomever he me even sharing pictures. Growing up he was a member of Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church and most recently was was a member of St. George's Orthodox Church.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Elaine; and his two children, Jerry and Natalie; his daughter-in-law, Jeanine; grandchildren, Jerry, Mary and Jelena; two siblings, Mike of Plano, TX and Joe from this area as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Helen Slipko.
Friends may call Thursday, November 14th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME, INC., 319-24th. St. cor. Welch Ave. Niagara Falls, NY where prayer services will be held at 8:00 PM. Trisagion Services will begin at 10:00 AM at the funeral home on Friday, November 15th, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1073 Saunder Settlement Rd., Niagara Falls, NY 14305 with the Very Reverend Paul R. Solberg officiating. Burial with Military Honors following in Riverdale Cemetery Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerald's memory may be made to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1073 Saunder Settlement Rd., Niagara Falls, NY 14305.
