Robert C. Cacner

BATAVIA — Robert C. Cacner, longtime resident of Niagara Falls and Vietnam veteran succumbs at 68, in the New York State Home for Veterans at Batavia on Sunday, October 6, 2013, after a lengthy illness in the New York State Veteran's Home at Batavia.

He was born in Niagara Falls on October 17, 1944, the son of Evelyn B. and the late George C. Cacner.

Robert attended local schools and then entered the United States Air Force serving from 1963-1971. He received numerous citations, including the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He was a member of the Elite Studies and Observations Group (SOG), highly classified, multi-service United States Special Operations Unit which conducted cover unit and participated in most of the significant campaigns of the Vietnam War, including the Gulf of Tonkin incident which precipitated increased American involvement, Operation Steel Tiger, Operation Tiger Hound, the Tet Offensive, Operation Commando Hunt, the Cambodian Campaign, Operation Lam Son 719, and the Easter Offensive. After his honorable discharge he received his Masters degree from the University of Buffalo and then worked at E.I. DuPont, retiring as the Manager of the Precious Metals Division.

Mr. Cacner is survived by his mother, Evelyn (Bingman) Cacner of Niagara Falls and his sister, Cheryl (Jerome) Konieczny of Boca Raton, FL. He was predeceased by his father, George C. Cacner (1977).

There will be no prior visitation. A military burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Acacia Park Cemetery in the Town of Pendleton. Arrangements made by the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC.
