Sr. Helen Welch, OSF

STELLA NIAGARA — Sr. Helen Welch, OSF, (formerly Sister Roberta) of Lower River Road, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Stella Niagara Health Center. She was born in Columbus, OH on February 18, 1925, the daughter of the late William and Anna (Blaney) Welch.

After graduating from Rosary High School in 1943, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara on January 30, 1946.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rosary Hill College in 1961. Sister Helen taught at St. Aloysius Academy in New Lexington, OH and later became the principal there. She taught at St. John's and St. Peter's Schools in Columbus, OH, St. Paul School in Athens, Sacred Heart Elementary, DeSales High School, Blessed Trinity, Our Lady of Victory Schools and was coordinator at St. Leo Convent in Columbus, OH. Sr. Helen also taught at St. Benedict and  St. Joachim School in Buffalo, NY, and St. Anthony School in Warsaw, NY. In 1964 she served as principal at Our Lady of the Rosary School in Greenville, SC. From 1997-2007, Sister Helen was local minister at Stella Niagara Convent.

Sr. Helen is survived by her sister, Sr. Mary Frances Welch, OSF; also many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Harold, Charles, William and Thomas Welch, Catherine Welch Gentile and Dorothy Welch Stokes.

The family will be present at Stella Niagara, 4421 Lower River Road on Monday from         2-5 PM, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sisters Chapel at Stella Niagara on Tuesday at 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, 4421 Lower River Road, Stella Niagara, NY 14144. Interment at Stella Niagara Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
