WEST CHESTER, PA —
Ruth Martha Wenke (Duthe) died Thursday, January 16, 2014, at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, PA, after a short illness. She was born May 12, 1921 in Niagara Falls, NY to the late Curtis Duthe and Hazel Olive (Lasher) Duthe. She was raised in Niagara Falls. On December 6, 1941, she was married to 2nd Lieutenant Royal F. Wenke at Zion Lutheran Church, Niagara Falls, NY. During WWII, she followed her husband to Ft. Benning, GA and to Yale University. While her husband was serving as a liaison officer for the U.S. Army in the China-Burma-India theatre, she moved with her daughter, Martha Ruth, to Tucson, AZ. While in Tucson, she and Martha lived on a dude ranch, where she rode horses most days. She also worked at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base as a cashier.
After the war, they all returned to Niagara Falls, NY, where a second daughter, Candace Lynne was born. Subsequently, they moved to Lewiston, NY, where they lived 30 years. In Lewiston, they belonged to the Lutheran Church of the Messiah and the Niagara Frontier Golf Course. After retirement in 1989, Ruth and Roy moved to Cypress Lakes, FL. Ruth was an avid golfer and lifelong card player, especially bridge.
Mrs. Wenke was predeceased in death by her husband, Royal F. Wenke; two brothers, Richard Duthe and George Minsterman. She is survived by two daughters, Martha (Mrs. John) Keenan of West Chester, PA and Candace (Mrs. Peter) Wienckowski, Baltimore, MD. Ruth leaves behind seven loved grandchildren and eight loved great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Grace (Mrs. Gerald) Lamb, Corfu, NY and Onalee (Mrs. Richard) Duthe, Pavilion, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and internment will be held at a later date yet to be decided. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in her name be sent to St. John's Episcopal Church, 576 Concord Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342.
