John Hanusin

NIAGARA FALLS — John Hanusin, age 94, of Bergholz, was called to his heavenly home on September 24, 2013, while at the Schoellkopf Health Center, Niagara Falls, NY.  Born in Banske, Czechoslovakia on May 26, 1919, son of the late Michael and Mary (Matte) Hanusin.  John came to the U.S. in 1937 and worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. He moved to Niagara County in 1941 and was employed at Dupont in Niagara Falls and the Carborundum Company- Abrasives Division, in Wheatfield, until his retirement in 1984. John was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He was the recipient of a European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, with one bronze battle star. John was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish at the Prince of Peace site, Carborundum 100 Club, and American Legion- Post 1451. Hobbies and interests included wine making, gardening, folk art, deer, turkey and pheasant hunting, fan of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, made sausage, was a great cook, and was an expert wild mushroom hunter. John cherished the time he spent with his family.

Predeceased by his wife, Mary (Tegda) Hanusin on August 5, 1993. They were united in marriage on May 24, 1941; a son, Timothy Hanusin; three brothers, George, Michael and Joseph Hanusin; and a sister, Anna Zaharlick.

Survivors include eight children, Mary (Anthony) Marcinkowski, John R. Hanusin, James Hanusin, Margaret Christine Hanusin, Carol (James) Schwartz, Cathy (James) Williams, Joseph (Grace) Hanusin and Michael Hanusin; eight grandchildren, Shawna, Trisha, Jimmy, Carlene, Kassandra, Carla, Patrick and Christopher; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Helen Kulick and Irene Winsock.

Friends may call at the DUBOIS FUNERAL HOME (731-3234), 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz), in Wheatfield, on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Services will be held on Saturday beginning at 9:30 AM in the funeral home, followed with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Prince of Peace site, 1055 N. Military Road, Niagara Falls. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Niagara Hospice, American Legion-Post 1451, or St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Prince of Peace site.
